Bieszczady Mountains
Bieszczady are mountains shrouded in legend, located in the southern-east Poland, at the border with Ukraine and Slovakia. The massifs of Tarnica, Wielka Rawka, Połonina Wetlińska and Caryńska encompasses the Bieszczadzki National Park, constitutes a refuge for over 200 animal species such as brown bear, wolf, lynx or wisent. From the peaks of Bieszczady, with a good weather one can see the 100 km remote Gorgans on Ukraine, or the winter peaks of Tatry on the west. They are a wild country, in many places still not touched by man.
Activities and places worth seeing
Bobry reserve in Uherce - a reserve encompassing gravel pits on the Olszanka river. A dozen of years ago beavers were let out in secret there in order to breed. Today, they are so numerous that they are establishing successive beaver lodges and colonies on the nearby rivers.
Krywe reserve - the reserve covers a 10 kilometre stretch of the San valley near Otryt. It is an exceptionally beautiful place, where the bends of the San river pass through the still exposed hill slopes. The uncommonness of picturesque landscape of this exceptionally charming place is emphasized by the rock chutes on San, the effect of the rocky bottom of this river, deep ravines of many streams, meanders and benches of the river. Another peculiarity of the landscape is its rich flora with 22 vegetation clusters. The fauna is rich with predators, large forest mammals, many species of birds, amphibians and reptiles, including the great Aesculapian snake (non-poisonous).
Hulskie reserve - this is a large, natural forest stand on the southern slope of the Otryt mountain range, near the former villages of Hulskie and Krywe at San. In the forest undergrowth approximately 300 of plant species can be found, including many alpine and west-Carpathian species. The area of the reserve is also a refuge for the forest fauna, including large mammals and predators. Brown bears, wolves and lynxes live here, and from great birds the golden eagle and spotted eagle.
Sine Wiry reserve - the area of this broad reserve covers a 7 kilometre long stretch of the Wetlinka river gorge, with old, natural beech and fir forest. The peculiarities of this place include rock chutes on rivers, feeding water birds, steep, precipitous banks over rivers and their picturesque gorges.
Zwiezło reserve - two beautiful mountain lakes on the Olchowaty stream, on the slopes of the Chryszczata massif (approx. 800 m asl). They were created during the great deluge in the year 1907.
Day by day itinerary
1st day Cracow
Arrival to Cracow, sightseeing in the city. Night in Cracow.
2nd - 5th day Bieszczady
Arrival to Wetlina and Ustrzyki Dolne, visiting of nearby reserves with a guide.
6th day Cracow
Return to Cracow. Departure.
