On the traces of John Paul II

A trip on the traces of one of the greatest Poles will allow a better look at him and at the same time at the recent history of our country. It is worth to visit the places, where John Paul II has worked, where he was growing up, and where he has always eagerly returned. It is also necessary to visit Tatra Mountains - the mountains beloved by John Paul II.

Places worth seeing

Kraków is the only city in the world which has as its vital parts the places connected with practically the entire life of John Paul II. The places here remember him as a student of Polish studies, as a worker, actor, poet, seminarian, young priest giving his first Masses, university lecturer, priest of students and their families, the Cracow Metropolitan and finally Head of the Catholic Church. Even though since his appointment to the Holy See in 1978, Karol Wojtyła (John Paul II) does not live in Cracow, his each visit to the King's Capital City leaves traces not only in human hearts, but also in the matter of the city itself - in their need to remember those meetings, the citizens of Cracow erect monuments to him, place remembrance plaques, name important institutions with his name.

Wadowice is the place where it all began - the birthplace of John Paul II. In his family house the Holy Father's museum can be found.

Zebrzydowska Calvary - a sanctuary in Zebrzydowska Calvary, created at the beginning of 17th century as a a Mikołaj Zebrzydowski foundation is nowadays one of the most interesting landscape and architectural creations in Poland and one of the most frequented Polish pilgrimage sites. Dozens of thousands of pilgrims gather especially during the Glorious Passion Play in the Easter Week, and during the Heavenly Mother's Triumph in August. The Calvary Sanctuary consists of a baroque basilica in which the miraculous painting of the Calvary Virgin Mary is placed, a cloister and a complex of churches and chapels.

Częstochowa - one of the main pilgrimage centres of the world. It is a city with a great cultural and national heritage, with a complex of valuable monuments, and at the same time is a modern city, with a wide infrastructure and socioeconomic base. Nine institutions of higher learning function here, with over 40 thousands of students. The city was added luster by the Council of Europe award, received as the first city in Eastern Europe.

Zakopane was visited by John Paul II for the last time in the year 1997. We will follow in his traces by visiting his beloved Tatra Mountains - the Morskie Oko lake. We will also visit the Zakopane town itself, which is considered by many to be one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Poland.
